If leaves and such fall inside the unit around the fan, unless you can remove the grill and completely shut the AC off, you’ll need to get a technician to take care of that.”

Annual or twice a year inspections by a professional can find problems before something breaks and leaves a homeowner with air conditioning.

“An inspection will test the equipment, make sure drain lines are clear and advise you of what’s needed,” Mastour said. “It’s just like having your car inspected and tuned up. You’ll get the best performance when everything is working peak efficiency.”

Even the best maintenance won’t stop the normal wear and tear on air conditioning units. Eventually something will have to be repaired or replaced, Mastour said.
