New Healthcare market report from Euromonitor International: "Analgesics in Italy"

Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/16/2014 -- The economic downturn has forced Italians to save money on non-essential products, thus impacting the sales of systemic analgesics. Consumers are willing to buy systemic analgesics to alleviate strong pain but are tending to avoid purchase if the pain is bearable in an effort to save money. Consumers are also checking their health care cupboards to make sure they do not buy something they already have. As a result, the majority of systemic analgesics recorded a decline in sales in 2013, with the exception of the most popular categories, ibuprofen and aspirin, which registered marginal gains.

Competitive Landscape

Aziende Chimiche Riunite Angelini Francesco (Angelini) continued to lead analgesics in 2013 with a value share of 34%, thanks mainly to its Tachipirina and Moment brands. Ranked second was Novartis Consumer Health with a 24% share thanks to its popular Voltaren brand. Bayer ranked third with a value share of 17%.

Industry Prospects

The difficult economic environment is set to continue over the short term in Italy and consumers are likely to remain cautious with their spending on analgesics, with many opting for value-for-money packs. However, hectic lifestyles will benefit products offering a quick solution to pain and which are easy to use or apply. In this scenario, marketing will play a crucial role for branded analgesics, which will also face further competition from private label products, more of which are likely to appear in the Italian marketplace.
