As First El Nino Storms Strike, L.A. Residents Brace for Flooding and Mudslides

There is still time to shore up homes against what is already a record-setting El Nino system, Weinstein Construction reports

Van Nuys, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/18/2016 -- Even while California's longtime drought drags on, residents in the Los Angeles area are preparing for flooding. With the months-long El Niño weather system already producing intense rainstorms, destructive surf, and mudslides along the state's coast, Los Angeles locals are realizing that it has been years since they looked at their drainage systems, residential waterproofing and other means of protecting against such harsh weather. Contractors in the area report a surge of business as the awareness of what El Niño will bring sets in, meaning that those who hope to weather the coming storms would do well to make arrangements immediately.

"With so much dry weather for years now, many people in the area have almost forgotten about how dangerous storms can be," Weinstein Construction owner and President Itzcik Weinstein said, "The El Niño weather system is back with a vengeance, though, and it looks like this one is going to be a whopper. It is absolutely critical that property owners in the Los Angeles area look into their hillside drainage, basement waterproofing, and other means of protecting against the fury of the storms to come."

Even in a body of water as large as the Pacific Ocean, distinct, cyclic patterns of warming and cooling arise. The best-known of these are likely a pair of well-studied phenomena called "El Niño" and "La Niña," with the former now gathering steam in the eastern and central parts of the Pacific along the equator.

As the warming of surface waters associated with El Niño continues, Californians can expect increasingly wetter weather. Low-pressure systems that bring in moisture from the warmer Pacific will dump more rain on the state, with harsh storms coming in from the ocean also threatening to cause mudslides along the coast.

What all this means in practice is that the yard drainage and waterproofing of California homes will be put to the test. Having endured years of dry weather and outright drought, many residents of the Los Angeles area are just now realizing what El Niño will mean for the properties they have invested so much into, leaving many local contractors busier than ever before.

There is still time to have the necessary work done before the worst of El Niño's effects are felt, though. The storms that have just hit southern and central California, causing flooding, mudslides, and so much damage of other kinds, are only a sign of what is likely to be a long period of similar weather events. The experts at Weinstein Construction therefore advise that those in the Los Angeles area get in touch with skilled, experienced contractors as soon as possible to make appropriate arrangements.
