BioSerenity Seeks Funding Support via Indiegogo to Start the Production of WEMU, a Revolution in Epilepsy Monitoring and Diagnosis

Paris, France -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/11/2014 -- Epilepsy is a neurological disease characterized by convulsive seizures, absence seizures and loss of consciousness. As an epileptic patient, it can be hard to live a normal life. A patient may not be allowed to drive, operate heavy machinery, swim or do certain tasks. It can be stressful to take care of young ones and of course, epilepsy can have a significant impact in the workplace.

Each patient requires a personalized treatment plan because patient reactions to different treatments are both diverse and unique to the individual.  An adequate treatment plan requires regular long-term monitoring and is based on observance of the brain's electric signals. To get this information, monitoring through electroencephalogram (EEG), coupled with electrocardiogram (ECG) and electromyogram (EMG) is necessary. With current fixed systems in hospitals, seizures are rarely recorded and providing an accurate diagnosis is a challenge.

WEMU - Wearable Epilepsy Monitoring Unit - consists of a body module (shirt) and a head module (hat) with biometric sensors collecting data through electric signals such as heart activity (electrocardiogram), muscle contraction (electromyogram) and brain activity (electroencephalogram).  It uses patented dry-sensor technology in combination with flexible electronic circuitry embedded into fabric and powered by lightweight rechargeable battery to create a unique easy-to-wear, comfortable to wear, long-term monitoring system. This 1st home-monitoring system can improve significantly the life of Epileptic patients. BioSerenity is already working on developing pattern detection systems and real time seizure risk forecasting, that will be added to the current device.

The Smartphone receives the collected physiological data through a low-energy Bluetooth transmission. This information is then analyzed, multiplexed with the video from the phone and stored locally on the device. The data from the Smartphone is uploaded on a Cloud system, which, in turn, enables doctors to visualize information and provide a diagnosis. BioSerenity is already moving towards an integration with Healthkit from Apple.

The WEMU-system was designed by a team with extensive experience in the healthcare industry, electronic design and IT systems. The BioSerenity team has a successful track record in startups and multinational companies alike and has obtained a pre-validation by industry experts and several of the best European hospitals in Neurology. The funding budget of $200,000 will be used to start the production of WEMU.
