Boston Marathon Runners Attribute Dr. William Brown, Sports Hernia Specialist, with Getting Them Back in the Race

Fremont, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/17/2015 -- Two runners who competed in the 2015 Boston Marathon, one of the six World Marathon Majors, attribute their ability to compete to Dr. William Brown, a renowned sports hernia specialist and surgeon. Both competitors underwent surgery less than a year before last April's annual marathon that draws over 30,000 athletes from around the world.

The Marathon's course run 26 miles 385 yards long and is considered to be on of the most difficult among marathons, due in part to Heartbreak Hill's ascent. This hill falls between the 20 and 21-mile marks and is believed to be the point at which runners' glycogen stores in the muscles are depleted.

To run in the Boston Marathon is a dream for many runners and completing it is an accomplishment, which makes it all the more remarkable for two of Dr. Brown's sports hernia surgery patients. Sports hernias are often misdiagnosed as groin muscle strain that will subside with rest. It's only when the pain returns with activity that runners seek a correct diagnosis and treatment, which can take months depending on how long it takes to find a specialist in sports hernias.

One from Austin, TX says, "Dr. Brown performed my double sports hernia and hip adductor surgeries in October of 2014. I ran the Boston Marathon the next April in the fastest time ever for me. Dr. Brown is a miracle worker."

Likewise, another runner who underwent sports hernia repair surgery with Dr. Brown a mere six months before the Marathon also finished.

"I examine, diagnose and repair sports hernias for runners, as much as I do for athletes in sports that are more prone to result in inguinal disruption injuries. Many runners have seen several doctors by the time they are in my office, and many have not been able to run for quite some time due to the pain and multiple misdiagnoses that delays recovery," explains Dr. Brown.

For these two Boston Marathon runners, receiving an accurate diagnosis and undergoing treatment sooner versus later was key to getting into physical therapy and achieving full recovery in time to not only run the Marathon, but for one to do in his best time to date.
