California Woman on a Mission to Reclaim a Smile Lost to Diabetes - A confident smile is something many people take for granted but California resident, V. Nin Wheat is on a mission to regain a once beautiful smile destroyed by diabetes.
In 2012, V. Nin discovered during a physical exam that her blood sugar level was three times higher than the normal reading. The shock of discovering this came with advice that it could destroy her nerves and threaten her heart.
Determined not to let the disease get the best of her, V. Nin took full-time interest in monitoring her blood glucose levels and was successful in maintaining it at a normal level. Yet, only half her battle was won, because the one thing she was never told was that diabetes could also gravely impact her dental health.
It wasn't until she started having sore and painful gums in 2013, that V. Nin realized her focus needed to be as heavily inclusive of her dental health. She fought back using over the counter drugs but by then it was too late.
Unknown to many, diabetes can seriously impact one's dental health. In fact, studies show that diabetics are more prone to developing oral infections and gum disease than those who do not have the disease. This is as diabetes reduces the body's resistance to infections, leaving the gums at risk for gingivitis. Left untreated, gingivitis can result in the destruction of the tissues that support the teeth, bones, gum and fibers that hold the gums to the teeth.
Apart from a ruined smile, V. Nin's self confidence has also been eroded. Having earned a Mass Communications Degree from UC Berkeley, she has worked in sales and was once a Customer Service Representative in a corporate office in San Francisco. Now, she works via labor temp agencies, stocking shelves, washing dishes, landscaping, housekeeping and other menial jobs that require little talking. All this was in a bid to reduce the embarrassment and escape the judgement of others.
She said, "It's not something that I am proud of and it has lead to my life being one of keeping my mouth shut in shame."
But there is still hope for V. Nin. Dental professionals have told her that her smile can be restored through gum repair surgery, bone grafting and adhesive held teeth. Sadly, she has no dental insurance. So to defray the expenses for her dental surgery, she has set up a GoFundMe Crowdfunding page with a campaign goal of $25,000 to pay for the expenses
"Any donation, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to repaying to everyone I meet after my teeth are fixed with lots of smiles," said V. Nin, who has high hopes of returning to a career in sales or customer service.
