CCGNJ Informs New Jersey Residents of State Senate Bill Proposing Tax and Regulation of Daily Fantasy Sports

Hamilton, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/01/2017 -- On June 30th, 2017 the New Jersey State Senate passed Bill S1927/A3532 with the intention of regulating daily fantasy sports competitions and protecting those who take part in the games. The Council on Compulsive Gambling in New Jersey (CCGNJ), a nonprofit organization which seeks to provide assistance to state residents who suffer from gambling problems, informed locals of the proposed bill facing the pass or veto of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

The CCGNJ encourages those who need help to recover from a gambling addiction to visit their website at http://www.800gambler.org/ and find the support they need to begin recovery. The CCGNJ provides resources on how to stop illegal gambling for sports in Atlantic City and other New Jersey locations, as well as information on treatment, support for friends and family, and prevention programs.

Fantasy sports games are online games in which participants create virtual teams comprised of real players of a professional sport; they are often associated with Fantasy Football. Daily fantasy sports are a subset of these games accelerated to conduct competitions in a shorter time frame than an entire game season, condensing the game into either a week-long frame or just one day.

The outcome of Christie's decision will determine whether or not New Jersey will impose a 10.5% tax on the winnings of companies in this industry. If Bill S1927/A3532 goes into effect, over six million dollars in revenue would be produced for the state in one year following its activation. New Jersey State Senator, James Whelan, argues the necessity of the bill, asserting that it is for the best interest of the people rather than the state itself.

Neva Pryor, Executive Director of the CCGNJ, stated, "One of the positive changes that Bill S1927/A3532 would create is the prevention of minors under the age of eighteen to play in daily fantasy sports games." While the CCGNJ is neither for nor against gambling, the organization also supports measures that encourage responsible play of daily fantasy sports contests as well as gambling behavior.

CCGNJ connects problem gamblers and their loved ones with support, treatment and hope for recovery from gambling addiction. If a loved one is going through difficult times due to betting on sports in Atlantic City and its surrounding areas, call the CCGNJ's 24/7 hotline, 800-GAMBLER.
