New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/19/2016 -- Chloroacetyl chloride is a versatile reagent and has been extensively used in organic synthesis. Chloroacetyl chloride is a bifunctional compound that makes it a useful chemical building block. Chloroacetyl chloride is also known as chloroacetic chloride; chlorocetic acid chloride and monochloroacetyl chloride among others. Industrially, chloroacetyl chloride is produced by oxidation of vinylidene chloride, the carbonylation of methylene chloride or the addition of chlorine to ketene. Chloroacetyl chloride may be prepared from chloroacetic acid and phosphorus pentachloride, thionyl chloride, or phosgene. Chloroacetyl chloride occurs as a colorless to yellowish liquid and has a very pungent odor. Chloroacetyl chloride reacts rapidly with water and liberates toxic gas upon contact with water. Chloroacetyl chloride is incompatible with alcohols, strong oxidizing agents and bases (including amines). Chloroacetyl chloride may react vigorously or explosively if mixed with diisopropyl ether or other ethers in the presence of trace amounts of metal salts.

Chloroacetyl chloride is widely used in the synthesis of chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Chloroacetyl chloride is used as an intermediate in the production of popular commercial herbicides: butachlor and alachlor. Butachlor is a herbicide of the acetanilide class and used as a selective pre-emergent herbicide in emerging economies. Alachlor is a herbicide from the chloroacetanilide family and used to control the growth of broad-leafed weeds and grasses in corn and many other crops. Alachlor is marketed under the trade names Bronco, Crop Star, Lariat, Micro-Tech, Alanex, Cannon, Intrro, Lasso and Partner. In addition, chloroacetyl chloride can be used to produce phenacyl chloride, a chemical intermediate, used commercially as a tear gas. Many cyclic compounds, more importantly heterocycles, have been prepared through the use chloroacetyl chloride as a reagent. Chloroacetyl chloride is also a necessary precursor for monochloroketene and occasionally serves as a chlorinating agent. Chloroacetyl chloride can also be used to prepare N-chloroacetyl aminoacids. In addition, chloroacetyl chloride is used in the synthesis of novel quinoline derivatives having antileishmanial activity.

The increase in consumption of herbicides is expected to drive the growth of chloroaceytl chloride market. The herbicides market is mainly driven by high profitability margin, the limited availability of arable land, changes in farming practices and technology and acceptance of modern farming and protected agriculture. Increasing demand of food grains and declining farmlands have increased pressure on farm yield improvement and reduction in crop losses due to pest attacks. In addition, rising demand for herbicides in emerging economies is expected to boost the demand for chloroaceytl chloride. However, chloroacetyl chloride is toxic and dangerous to environment. Growth of bio-herbicides, rising environmental concerns and stringent regulations and approvals could hamper the growth of this market.

Latin America and Asia-Pacific are the largest consumers of this industry, accounting together, for majority of the market share. China and India are among top consumers of chloroacetyl chloride in Asia Pacific due to increasing use of herbicides for pest control. Rising urbanization and a growing population has placed a great demand on the agricultural production system in these countries. Herbicides play a key role in a worldwide increase in agricultural production. Latin America is the fastest growing region, in terms of revenue.
