In healthy condition articular cartilage which covers the end of the bones that form the joint is smooth and provides low friction surface for the joint structures. However in conditions such as arthritis, trauma, injuries etc. it becomes rough and damaged causing pain and swelling. Joint cartilage once damaged naturally heals poorly in most cases. Chondroplasty is performed to decrease complications, risks, and recovery time. The purpose of chondroplasty is to remove away the damaged joint surface.
