Clark Hulings' Archives Unveiled to the Public, Honoring the Legacy of the Renowned American Painter

Extensive array of paintings, drawings, historical insights, and resources showcases the breadth and depth of Hulings’ captivating artwork and influence

Santa Fe, NM -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/31/2016 -- Revered for capturing the essence of ancestral homelands. Championed by art collectors for his technical brilliance. Respected for his profound impact on American art since the 1970's. This is Clark Hulings, the renowned American realist painter. For the first time, thanks to the devoted efforts and commitment of his wife, Mary, and daughter, Elizabeth, the comprehensive archives of Hulings' art work, history, personal experiences, and insights are available to the public, to be viewed and embraced through a robust website, social media, and related resources.

Hulings was a global, award-winning artist who captured the heart and soul of everyday people and their lives from the Grand Canyon to Oaxacan villages and Parisian traffic circles. Among his signature subjects are complex architectural scenes and vibrant outdoor markets, boasting their array of colors, surfaces, and shapes. His affection for donkeys became a trademark, with the animal's quiet demeanor of loyalty and toughness serving as a metaphor for human patience and perseverance.

After Hulings' death in 2011, his wife and daughter made the commitment to secure his recognition in the canon of American master painters. They have dedicated countless hours to organizing Hulings' artwork and writings, and compiled extensive background and research information. From the beginning, their goal was to support collectors, auction houses, galleries, dealers, and museums by providing a central resource for information, licensing, authentication, prints/related artwork, and sales and advisory assistance.

"Rather than turn over my father's archives to a museum or somewhere or someone else, I want to manage my father's legacy myself," said Elizabeth Hulings. "To that end, I have a responsibility to get his works curated into museums at higher and higher levels in order to ensure that Clark Hulings is recognized as a master American painter of the 20th century."

The enhanced and vibrant Clark Hulings website takes viewers on a journey of Hulings as an artist and a man of his time; why he painted the works he did; and why his paintings mattered. There are galleries of Hulings' work, and the site addresses the significance of these pieces. Along with his oil paintings, the site showcases Hulings' entire body of work, including drawings; works on paper; illustrations; and freshly revealed images that have never been presented before.

The site is a valuable resource for anyone who has a Hulings painting and wants to authenticate, appraise, and document the piece. There's also a store with giclées, ephemera, books and catalogues, for purchase by anyone who is interested in his work and would like to own it in some form.

In addition, Elizabeth will create a new post every week featuring information and images that have never before been published online. These posts will include Clark Hulings' writings—what he had to say about various paintings—and she will add her own history to it. And sometimes, the blog will work the other way. It will be a solicitation for information, or sharing of her investigation of a particular work that she's endeavors to get to learn more about.

"The Clark Hulings site is also a resource for me, because part of the legacy that sits on my shoulders is managing my father's archives and building his catalogue raisonée," said Elizabeth. "I hope that people will share information with me. I'm counting on the community to help."

Elizabeth and Mary Hulings also established the Clark Hulings Fund (CHF) in 2011, in Clark Hulings' memory, to help professional visual artists compete in an increasingly complex marketplace by providing them with strategic business tools, training, and support, regardless of the styles or movements in which they work.

"During his career, Clark shared his professional experience directly with other artists because he understood that helping them resolve specific problems required precise assistance," said Jack Morris, Jr., of Morris & Whiteside Auctions and the Clark Hulings Estate team. "Today, the Clark Hulings Fund continues the tradition he established, through a network of professional resources not previously available to working artists."

With the unveiling of Clark Hulings' comprehensive archives to the public, Elizabeth honors her father's legacy continues to solidify his position in the canon of American fine artists.

"We are actively participating in the marketplace, tracking the secondary market and provenance for Clark Hulings' works, and serving as a resource for collectors, private dealers, gallerists, representatives of auction houses, and people who inherited a painting from Aunt Sally that they did not even know she had," said Elizabeth.
