Coconuts and Food Allergens addressed by AIB at TraceGains Webinar
Westminster, CO -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/28/2014 -- In the recent TraceGains webinar about food allergens, one of the attendees asked, “Is coconut considered a tree nut?” Stephanie Lopez, Food Safety Services Innovation at AIB International, VP Food Safety Services Innovation at AIB International the guest speaker answered, “From a regulatory stand point for an allergen labeling stand point: yes. Coconut is a tree nut. There has been push back from the scientific community saying that it is not a tree nut, but for an allergen stand point the FDA is saying it is a tree nut. It would have to be treated as a separate allergen from your other tree nuts.”
Allergens are the leading cause for recalls, causing significant consumer health issues, scrap costs, and sourcing conundrums. Join our discussion on allergen control issues with specific emphasis on label control measures.
AIB International is a corporation founded by the North American wholesale and retail baking industries in 1919 as a technology transfer center for bakers and food processors. The original mission of the organization was to "put science to work for the baker," and that basic theme is still central to all of the programs, products, and services provided by AIB to baking and general food production industries worldwide.
