Colorado Springs Bridge Named for Pearl Harbor Survivor

Honolulu, HI -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/27/2017 -- Over the course of the last 75 years, Lieutenant James Downing has become a well-known voice recounting the events surrounding December 7th, 1941, and by the end of 2017 the second-oldest Pearl Harbor survivor will have a new bridge in Colorado Springs, CO named for him.

Downing has made countless appearances across the United States, speaking to adults and children alike about the tragedy of Pearl Harbor. To honor his dedication, the local government of Colorado Springs decided to name a prominent structure in his honor. On October 26th, 2017, the retired lieutenant came out for a ribbon-cutting ceremony christening the new I-25 bridge.

The Lieutenant James "Jim" Downing Bridge crosses over Cimarron Street and aims to relieve a longstanding issue of traffic hindrances and restricted lanes. Though the name has been decided, the bridge itself won't be completed until the end of the year.

Besides appearing for the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new bridge, Downing has also attended multiple high school and university Q&As, was the guest of honor at West Virginia University's 150th anniversary celebration, threw out the first pitch at a Tampa Bay baseball game, made an appearance on Megyn Kelly Today, and even authored his own book, The Other Side of Infamy: My Journey through Pearl Harbor and the World of War.

A bridge named for the aging veteran honoring his military service and his role as an educator on the topic of Pearl Harbor is a well-deserved honor, and will help to guarantee that both Downing's legacy and the memory of Pearl Harbor lives on for many years to come.
