In the unveiling ceremony from January 12th, 2017, US Mint officials were kind with details and shared their view on the design of the coin and the reasoning behind it.

The 225th anniversary Gold American Liberty Coin is a symbol or the cultural and ethnic diversity present in the US, the depiction of the African- American Lady Liberty is the first in a bi-annual series that will follow with other ethnicities design: Asian-American, Hispanic-American, Indian-American and others.

Also, the Liberty Coin design makes a statement of the evolving notion of "liberty" and "equality", them having different meanings over history, and nowadays it is a reminder of big dreams and opportunities that seem impossible at first.

The product's design was the result of the U.S Mint initiative, the Artist Infusion Program (AIP), that gathered American professional artists with different heritages to bring a fresh perspective to the soon to be issued Liberty Coin.

The obverse design presents Lady Liberty having features of an African-American woman, with a crown of stars that reminds the stars on the Statue of Freedom. What impressed the most is the genuineness and confidence from her look. The fine lines and pedantic attention to details make this coin a unique and already popular piece of art.

The laborious design was done by AIP designer Justin Kunz and sculpting by US Mint sculptor-engraver Phebe Hemphill.

The inscription on the obverse are: "LIBERTY," "1792," "2017," and "IN GOD WE TRUST" and initials of the artists.

The reverse is as inspiring as the obverse. An eagle in flight, with wings wide spread beautifully contoured. It is symbol of strength, determination and perspective, all qualities of US nation. It is a US Mint first to have the eagle in such outline. The design was created by AIP designer Chris T. Costello and engraved by US Mint sculptor-engraver Michael Gaudioso.

The coin has the inscriptions: "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "1OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD," "100 DOLLARS," "W" West Point Mint mark, and the artists' initials.

"225th ANNIVERSARY" inscription is edge-lettered on the coin, the second time in US Mint history when high-relief striking and edge lettering are used.

The Liberty coin is struck from 1 Troy oz. of .9999 fine (24-karat) gold in detailed high relief and it is legal tender for $100. Its diameter is 1.205 inches or 30.61 mm. As already mentioned, the Liberty coin is the second 24-karat gold coin struck by US Mint. The first one was in 2006, the American Gold Buffalo Coin.

The initial pricing will be announced closer to the issue date.
