Concussion Risk Prompts California Playground Safety Inspection Company to Focus on Surface Impact Testing

With the rising focus on concussion risk in sports, Safe 2 Play has expanded their services to include surface impact testing. The synthetic turf playing surface remains one area of that has been largely overlooked to reduce concussion risk. The CDC estimates that between 350,000 and 817,000 concussions occur in sports and recreation every year from contact with the playing surface(1). By offering surface impact testing, Safe 2 Play is helping to bring attention to possible non-compliant sports fields thereby reducing the occurrence of concussions.

Head Injury Criterion (HIC) measures the probability of head injury due to impact. Safe 2 Play uses TRIAX equipment to determine if the HIC of a playground surface is compliant or non-compliant. For sports field safety surfacing inspections, Safe 2 Play offers GMAX testing with specialized equipment called the A-Missile and this process involves testing the infill at ten locations. G-max impact safety testing is one of the most common tests performed at SAFE 2 PLAY that determines impact attenuation performance using a test method that simulates the impact of a child's head with the surface. The G-max is the measure of the maximum acceleration (shock) produced by an impact. The test is performed in accordance with ASTM F1936-10, a Standard Specification for Shock Attenuation, with the technical requirements of ASTM F355 procedure using an "A missile".
