Millions of Americans Affected by Temperature Related Insomnia

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/09/2014 -- On an annual average, 60 million Americans suffer the symptoms of the sleep disorder more popularly known as insomnia. This disorder describes the condition where a person has a difficult time falling asleep or, even if he or she managed to fall asleep initially, sustaining it is another issue altogether.

Some of the many causes of insomnia are stress, depression, anxiety, certain medical conditions, some medications, changes and shifts in one’s hormone levels, and poor lifestyle choices. It is also, almost often, associated with aging, which explains why men and women approaching their andropause and menopause stage often experience its symptoms.

One of the symptoms of insomnia that causes a huge problem among patients are hot flashes, or unexpected warmth or heat in different parts of their body, and excessive sweating throughout the night. This type of insomnia is largely related to temperature issues.

When dealing with temperature related insomnia, experts underlined the difference between skin temperature and core temperature. Skin temperature is superficial, affected by environmental heat and cold, as well as other factors such as posture, lighting, nutritional health, anxiety and pain. Core body temperature, on the other hand, is the body’s internal temperature. In order to promote sleep, it’s not just the skin temperature that should be kept low, but also the core temperature.

The obvious solutions suggested to deal with temperature related insomnia include seeking medical attention, where patients are likely to be prescribed with sleeping medications. Simple actions, such as controlling the room temperature and exercising 5 to 6 hours before bedtime, are also highly recommended. Sleeping aids such as cooling mats and pads, as well as cooling sprays and gels are also useful in regulating one’s body temperature.

New Home Innovations has just recently come up with a new tool to combat insomnia, particularly for those having to deal with heat-related discomfort, hot flashes, and night sweats. It is called the PolarGel Pillow, a cooling gel pillow that features the latest technology in cooling gels. It comes in a size that is large enough to provide greater coverage than regular cooling pillows or cooling pads. Hot and cold spots are also prevented from forming, since the gel was designed to distribute body heat evenly throughout the pillow. The gel is also formulated so that it remains below the room temperature, and effectively keeps the patient’s skin and core temperature lowered.

New Home Innovations’ PolarGel Pillow is distributed by Amazon.com
