Could Hydrogen Be the Future of Heating Britain's Homes?

Nelson, Lancashire -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/26/2016 -- A contentious issue for a number of years now, the UK has bold targets to tackle global warming and climate change which could now include the use of hydrogen to heat UK homes. Hydrogen is a much greener gas and plans are now in place to cease the use of natural gas amidst a growing need to find more sustainable alternatives. The move comes as the UK tries to adhere to goals set out in the Climate Change Act, which dictates an 80 per cent cut in emissions on 1990 must be achieved by 2050.

There is a proposal to pilot the idea in the city of Leeds, which could see the entirety of the gas network updated to use hydrogen, if the plans come into place. Northern Gas Networks (NGN) has estimated the costs of the project to be near to £2bn, who has received funding from Ofgem, the energy regulatory body. Should the pilot trial be successful, it could be rolled out throughout other towns and cities throughout the UK.

A spokesperson for the Hosemaster said "In today's day and age with increasing pressure to find renewable and more sustainable energy sources, this comes as great news and if successful, could pave the way for a greener Britain. It will be interesting to see how the pilot develops and we hope it will mark the start of greener energy practices right across the board."
