Credit Card Thieves Continue to Target Gas Stations, ATMs, and Restaurants

Manchester, NH -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/29/2016 -- Credit cards used to be perceived as a safe way to make financial transactions. Thieves who snatch purses or pickpockets are unable to steal cash because of these cards. However, things have changed and fraudsters have found ways to make their way to the pockets of consumers.

Credit card thieves continue to target gas stations, ATMs, and restaurants. Thieves use skimming devices to steal the credit card information from consumers. The crime is typically consummated in a matter of minutes, and in most cases, without the card holder knowing it.

Card skimmers are small devices that are designed to scan and read credit card data. Once thieves obtain the data they need, they usually sell the information or make a new credit using the stolen information.

According to authorities, thieves are able to install skimming devices inside the credit card slots. There are also those who place fake card slots on ATM machines for the purpose of stealing information.

There are also employees in establishments such as restaurants who use handheld skimmers to steal from customers. If not caught, thieves can continue to victimize thousands of consumers.

There have been thieves who were prosecuted and please guilty to fraud charges.

According to Jeffrey Marshall, detective from the Nassau County Police Department in New York, he encountered cases where three different establishments within a two-minute drive have had employees skimming credit cards.

Unfortunately, electronic skimmers have become so advanced that consumers won't even notice that they are being victimized at the time of the commission of the crime.

Dan DeFelippi, a reformed credit card hacker, was caught by the Secret Service. He did not go to prison and instead was made to train Secret Service agents the art of skimming.

According to DeFelippi, he has made thousands of dollars every day ATM cashing. His favorite target was gas pumps. Gas pumps are everywhere, and all thieves have to do is install the device, go back, and gather information.

Authorities believe customers can result to measures that would protect themselves from fraudsters. It is recommended that consumers take time to check their credit card statements regularly.

Consumers may also use the set of RFID blocking sleeves, which are designed to fight thieves. These sleeves can also be placed in wallets so consumers can use them anytime while traveling or dining out.
