Tallahassee, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/06/2014 -- The hottest wave of social media to jump start any company is KickStarter, a global crowdfunding platform based in the United States. According to their website, KickStarter has received over $1 billion in pledges from 5.7 million donors to fund 135,000 projects including films, music, video games, and food related projects.
The wildest example is the “coolest cooler” ever – a tailgate cooler that has a USB port, a blender in the lid, an LED light for night and a cool Bluetooth waterproof speaker for your tunes. The start-up hoped to raise $50,000, but in less than a week it’s raised 7.8 million!
Not all projects are as successful and more fail than succeed. And there are the stranger than truth projects like the guy who wanted to raise $10 so he could make potato salad – he raised almost $53,000.
Local Tallahassee residents are even using this funding platform. A mother and son combo just launched a project for their ready to drink iced tea company called NaughTeas. NaughTeas is one of about a dozen active Tallahassee projects on KickStarter. In just 2 days they raised 15% of their $32,000 goal. But unless they reach the goal in 27 more days, the supporters aren’t charged and the project fails. It’s a tough do-or-die social media scenario.
RJ Wizemann, president of Naughteas, said he and his mother, Carter DeWitt, are impressed with the initial support the project is receiving and hopes that Tallahassee residents will get behind the home town entrepreneurs. “Surprisingly, a lot of people didn’t opt for the rewards– they said they were touched by our video and just wanted to help. We are honored. We will send them our tea anyway.”
Check them out on KickStarter and support a local mother and son combo.
