Future of Crude Oil Desalter Market with Growth Factors and Trends

Market dynamics such as drivers, opportunities, and restraints of the market were analyzed in detail and are illustrated in the report through tables. The report also provides a detailed industry analysis of the global crude oil desalter market with the help of Porter’s Five Forces model.

Albany, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/19/2016 -- Crude oil extracted from oil reserves contains many detrimental impurities such as sand, salts, drilling mud, and polymer. The salt content in crude oil varies depending on source of the crude oil. Various salts such as sodium chloride, calcium chloride, and magnesium chloride are present in crude oil. A crude oil desalter is used to remove impurities such as salts and moisture from the crude oil. Crude oil is treated to remove impurities before it is processed in a refinery. If left untreated, the impurities can cause various operating and maintenance problems such as corrosion, abrasion, plugging and fouling of equipment, and poisoning of catalysts in processing units. Crude oil desalting is generally the first process that is carried out in a refinery.

Crude oil desalting is an efficient method to remove salts and impurities from crude oil. A desalter generally consists of various components such as process vessel, distribution system, electrodes, transactors, mud washer, and level control devices. Desalting of crude oil consists of various processes, namely water dilution and injection, water dispersion in crude oil, emulsification of diluted water in crude oil, distribution of emulsion in electrostatic field, coalescence procedure, and settling of water droplets. Crude oil desalters are available in different types such as single stage crude oil desalter, two stage crude oil desalter, and three stage crude oil desalter. A single stage crude oil desalter is around 90% efficient in removing salts from crude oil. A two stage crude oil desalter is around 95-98% efficient, whereas a three stage crude oil desalter is more than 98% efficient in removing salts from crude oil. A single stage crude oil desalter has just one coalescer. A two stage crude oil desalter has two coalescers, while a three stage crude oil desalter has three coalescers to improve the desalting efficiency. Two stage or three stage crude oil desalters are preferred over single stage crude oil desalters when excess water dilution or desired salt concentration is required.

Type and technology of desalters used significantly affect the desalting performance and efficiency. Additionally, various others factors such as crude oil feed rate, crude oil quality, electrical field intensity, control of water level, temperature/viscosity/density relationships, wash water rate, emulsion formation, type of pumps, flow configuration, type of valves, type of mixers, control of emulsion layers, emulsifier technology, and brine recycle rate also affect desalting performance. Desalters are also used in fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) units, which convert heavy hydrocarbon portions of petroleum crude oils to more valued products such as gasoline and olefin gases to adjust the disparity between the market demand and production supply of valued refined petroleum products.

The global crude oil desalter market is segmented on the basis of type and geography. On the basis of type, the crude oil desalter market is classified into single stage crude oil desalter, two stage crude oil desalter, and three stage crude oil desalter. The two stage crude oil desalter type segment dominated the global crude oil desalter market in 2014. The number of crude oil refineries are projected to increase in the near future which would boost the global crude oil desalter market. Many regions across the globe such as the Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific are planning new refineries or expanding existing refineries. Countries in the Middle East such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE have built new crude oil refineries in the recent past.

Increasing refinery constructions have boosted the installation of new crude oil desalters. Rising adoption of fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) units has also augmented the crude oil desalters market. However, the growth of the crude oil desalter market is hampered by decreasing demand for refined petroleum products (gasoline and diesel) in Europe.

Some of the players in the global crude oil desalter market include Agar Corporation Ltd., Cameron International Corporation, Canadian Petroleum Processing Equipment Inc., Croda International Plc., EN-FAB Inc., Forum Energy Technologies Inc., GasTech Engineering Corporation, Komax Systems Inc., Mackenzie Hydrocarbons (Australia) Pty Ltd., and Petro Techna International Ltd.
