Alberta, Canada -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/14/2014 -- Launched this week in the Apple iTunes Store, Dermatologist In Your Pocket, is the brainchild of two leading North American dermatologists: Dr Barry Lycka & Dr Peter Lynch. It is designed to help first line health care professionals more easily diagnose skin diseases or problems.
The Dermatologist in Your Pocket app simplifies the diagnostic process using a long established algorithm for skin disease diagnosis and helps to provide an answer in minutes. Medical personnel can establish a likely diagnosis quickly, and even patients can get an idea of what skin problem they might have.
The app is based on the work of prominent University of California Davis Professor Peter Lynch who first developed a paper based algorithm 35 years ago to help teach medical students, residents and other clinicians how to diagnose skin diseases. “I came up with the idea that if a morphological algorithm could be developed, students and clinicians would not have to depend on visual memory to make a correct diagnosis”, he says.
Dr Lycka, a leading Edmonton based cosmetic dermatologist and U of A Associate Professor, is a former student of Dr Lynch. He hit on the idea of using new technologies to make the algorithm more accessible and even easier to use.
“The Dermatologist in Your Pocket app will enable more people to be helped more easily”, he says.
He approached Fission Media, one of the top mobile software companies in western Canada, to help develop the app. It has taken over a year to design and produce.
The app is now available for sale in the Apple iTunes Store.
