Detroit Non-Profit Youth Farmers Market Event Celebrates Grant for over $50k

 

Provo, UT -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/30/2015 -- On Wednesday, September 30, 2015, Islandview Farmers Market, Detroit's youth-operated market located on the city's lower east side, will hold its first "Harvest Celebration." The event is being held at the Young Sprouts' Islandview Farmers Market, located 7200 Mack Avenue, in Detroit from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The youth farmers market event connects local environmental and health-conscious residents citywide with garden-farmer and other vendors and is free to the public.

The Young Sprouts' Islandview Farmers Market is a program of the non-profit organization, GenesisHOPE. The Harvest Celebration event celebrates the Detroit garden farming community, and specifically the work young farmers (aged 16 - 24) from the area and surrounding neighborhoods are doing through the Islandview Farmers Market. The event also honors GenesisHOPE Community Development Corporation as one of 62 community organizations across the United States to receive a service-learning, youth-led grant from the State Farm Youth Advisory Board. The grant is being awarded for GenesisHOPE's GREEN Corps environmental internship program.

Features of the event include live entertainment, opportunities for local Bridge Card users to double the value for of their allotment for produce, and resident guests having the chance to win meat and other food items. All participants receive up to 25% discount on purchases during the event. A cook-off competition is also a highlight of the festivities in which participants may win up to $1,000 in prizes. The cook-off begins at 5:00 p.m.

Throughout the summer months, Islandview Farmers Market provides space for local vendors to showcase and sell products, programs, and entertainment benefiting the local community.

About GREEN Corp
GREEN Corp is an internship for youth (ages 16 - 24) in the City of Detroit. The program hires young people from the neighborhood to implement community service learning projects and become environmental mentors for younger children in the community. GREEN Corp interns are empowered to engage in decision-making for young people to become directly involved and speak out on issues in the community.

"Being a part of the GREEN Corp is important to me because it is a program based around informing the youth in Detroit about the environment and how they can help make it better," said GREEN Corp member, Jeremiah Bartholomew.

In addition to State Farm, participating supporters include Eastern Market Corporation, Genesis Lutheran Church, and Wheat Ridge Ministries, with the cook-off sponsored by Detroit Lions Charities.
