Montan wax is also known as lignite wax or OP wax. It is natural hard wax obtained from types of lignites or brown coals, varying in colour from white to dark brown, which contains pure wax (50-80%), resin (20-40%) and bitumen (10-20%). Chemical component mainly include non-glyceride carboxylic acid esters (C24- C30; 62 - 68 % w/w), free long-chain organic acids (2226 %), long-chain alcohols, ketones, and hydrocarbons (715 %). Due to its good physical and chemical properties, montan wax is often an ideal substitute for the expensive Carnauba Wax. It is widely used in daily chemical industry, wax polish industry, carbon paper industry, electrical industry, machinery industry, paint industry, lubricant industry, phonograph record industry and many other industries using wax.

Lignite, often referred to as brown coal, is a soft brown combustible sedimentary rock that is formed from naturally compressed peat. It is considered the lowest rank of coal due to its relatively low heat content. Lignite can be separated into two types. The first is xyloid lignite or fossil wood and the second form is the compact lignite or perfect lignite. Although xyloid lignite may sometimes have the tenacity and the appearance of ordinary wood it can be seen that the combustible woody tissue has experienced a great modification.
