Emergence of Traditional Publishers in eBook Market Affecting Independent Publishers

Self-publishing industry insiders have noticed the significant increase in the number of traditional authors and publishers in the eBook industry.

Dublin, Ireland -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/13/2015 -- The traditional players in this segment helped the industry see sustained growth. This has caused the self-publishing route to raise its reputation from the depths of the publishing scene to the highest it has ever been. One reason which has been theorized about the influx of publishing houses and authors from traditional backgrounds is because the business of brand building and building a strong reputation in digital age has exploded.

Today, personal brand building goes hand-in-hand with business careers. Speakers, authors, professors, all use the self-publishing industry to secure their reputation, their brand and grow their profits within the wider world. However, electing to venture into the eBook pool, does not mean that the road to becoming published will be easy for many independent authors.

Unless, authors in this realm have a publishing background or are supported by a publishing house, they could become overwhelmed by the tasks they must complete before a book can be completed. Julia Sloman, Managing Director of eBookTemplate.deals states:

"We help authors who self-publish eBooks, and many have told us that they did not expect the amount of work outside of writing they needed to do before their book could be completed. Publishing houses help with cover art among other things and far too many authors are left reeling when they must face that aspect of self-publishing as well. This market is highly trendy right now and as a result, it requires more work to get a following."

Furthermore, independent self-publishers will have to bear the brunt of being unable to compete with the traditional houses because the houses have greater resources and the ability to offer their eBooks for free. This has caused many independent authors to rethink their marketing process and no longer rely on free eBooks to draw new readers to their works.Sloman states:

"Many of the complaints the public and traditional houses had with self-publishing is that the aesthetics just were not there. Aesthetics such as formatting, grammar and design including the design how to present a eBook influenced many readers, good or bad. By giving independent authors the resources to have professional, authentic cover art without having to pay exorbitant prices, require a background in design or a large publishing house behind them enables them to differentiate themselves in a market where the book cover is becoming as important as the material."

The self-publishing industry is expected to see growth through 2016, and that growth is bolstered by traditional players entering the market. However, independent authors will have to adapt their business model to survive in the new self-publishing market.
