According to reviewers, this is a powerful fantasy novel. It centers around Therese Mills, a fifteen-year old girl who loses both parents when a murderer shoots at their car. Therese winds up in a coma in which she gets introduced to the twin sons of Hades—Hypnos, the god of sleep, and Thanatos, the god of death.

Thanatos, who is beautiful but unused to acceptance from gods and humans, is taken by surprise when Therese showers him with affection in what she believes is just a dream. Entranced, he makes a deal with his father Hades for winning her love. Hades gives Thanatos permission to proceed and entrusts Thanatos's work to Hypnos.

Therese's aim is to find and kill the murderer of her parents. If she succeeds in this, she will become immortal and can live with Thanatos Although she is initially driven by her love for her parents and her desire to see them in the Underworld, her feelings for Thanatos blossom, and she wants to become his queen. Some of the gods are pleased with the relationship and give her gifts; others try to kill her.

Greek mythology has been used extensively in this novel. Readers will observe the gods' interactions among themselves and their involvement in human affairs. This novel may offer good mythology lessons to those who have not tried such genres of books.

Since Greek mythology has been woven into the plot of the novel, readers can enjoy adventure as well as fantasy and romance. This means it contains elements of different genres. Not only that, diverse types of emotions including anguish, romance, revengeful anger and determination to succeed are deployed beautifully in this novel.

Although Therese is initially concerned with avenging the murderer who has killed her parents, romance slowly evolves; but her steadfast aim to seek justice and revenge remains intact.

Therese soon finds out that her destiny and also her choices are controlled by oaths as well as alliances that are beyond her control and understanding. She also realizes that her paths to revenge, and also to love, may not be smooth and easy.

The Gatekeeper's Sons, being the first of the series, does not provide a neat conclusion. So, it can be said that Eva Pohler succeeds in kindling eagerness and curiosity in the minds of the readers.
