These devices are now used for securing the majority of PICCs and a small portion of CVCs, PIVCs and dialysis catheters. There are numerous studies showing the clinical benefits of the StatLock® device from C. R. Bard, the leading MCSD in the European market, as compared with tape or sutures. It is worth noting that MCSDs that rely on adhesives, such as the StatLock®, lose grip over time and need to be replaced approximately every seven days. Studies also suggest substantial potential cost savings from using a MCSD when the cost of materials, nursing time and treatment of preventable complications is factored in. Depending on the MCSD and catheter, additional products may be used to stabilize the catheter. Alternatively, catheters are often secured without the use of a MCSD. However, a transparent dressing alone does not anchor the catheter securely against horizontal and lateral forces and is often incorrectly thought of as a securement device. In situations where catheters have a high level of exposure outside the insertion site, tape can be used to secure them.
