Famous Linguistics Prof Deborah Tannen Discusses Family Talk - Parents and Adult Sibs - on Family Matters VoiceAmerica Show

Dr. Deborah Tannen, famous author of “You Just Don't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation,” will discuss the difficulties that arise in conversations among adult siblings and between parents and their adult children.

Phoenix, AZ -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/05/2015 -- Closeness, rivalry, support, connection, control, criticism, jealousy, misunderstandings, misinterpretations of intent — what people want from family relationships and what they experience in them often fail to match. Dr. Deborah Tannen will discuss how adult family members talk with each other October 6, 2015 on Family Matters.

The way siblings talk to each other and listen to each other, or fail or refuse to do so, weighs heavily in how the relationships feel. What a mother says out of concern can easily sound like criticism to a daughter. Add the fact that men's communication styles are very different from women's, and you have the complicated, wonderful and terrible phenomenon of family. Dr. Tannen's research shows how understanding the ways we use words can improve relationships among adult siblings and between parents and their adult children.

Dr. Deborah Tannen is best known as the author of "You Just Don't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation," which was on The New York Times best seller list for nearly four years, including eight months as No. 1, and has been translated into 30 languages. This is the book that brought gender differences in communication style to the forefront of public awareness. Among her many other books, "Talking from 9 to 5: Women and Men at Work "was a New York Times business best-seller; "The Argument Culture: Stopping America's War of Words" won the Common Ground book award; and "I Only Say This Because I Love You: Talking to Your Parents, Partner, Sibs and Kids When You're All Adults" won a Books for a Better Life award. Her most recent books, "You're Wearing THAT?: Understanding Mothers and Daughters in Conversation" and "You Were Always Mom's Favorite!: Sisters in Conversation Throughout Their Lives," were also New York Times best sellers.
