Florida Urology Clinic Offers Recently FDA Approved HIFU Procedure

Celebration, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/23/2016 -- Late last year, the Food and Drug Administration approved a new treatment option for patients suffering from prostate cancer known as a High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU). Dr. Richard Lotenfoe, MD recently announced that his clinic, Urology Health Solutions, is qualified to perform this new treatment procedure at his clinic.

"The High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound is a minimally invasive treatment practice for patients suffering from prostate cancer with a low risk of side effects," said Dr. Lotenfoe. "Prior to FDA approval, patients choosing this treatment option needed to travel out of the country to have the procedure done," he added.

Dr. Lotenfoe is the lead urologist at Urology Health Solutions, a Florida-based urology center. The clinic specializes in diagnosing and treating prostate cancer through the use of the new HIFU procedure, as well as identifying other male and female urological concerns.

Dr. Lotenfoe is one of only a handful of Urologists in the country trained to carrying out the new procedure.

"This new method will help enhance the quality of life for many prostate cancer patients," Lotenfoe said. "Previous treatment options like the radical prostatectomy posed significant side effects – urinary leakage, impotence, to name a few." According to Prostate Cancer Canada, a foundation dedicated to the advocacy, research, education, support, and awareness of prostate cancer, approximately 3- to 4-percent of HIFU patients may experience the development of a "fistula" – a treatable condition known as an opening between the urinary system and the bowel.

The high-intensity focused ultrasound is a procedure that uses heat to destroy specific areas of the prostate gland that is affected by cancer cells. Currently, it is only available to cancer patients considered to have "low-grade cancer," meaning prostate cancer that has not spread to other areas of the body, outside of the prostate gland.

This new procedure could significantly decrease the number of prostate cancer cells spreading throughout the body of cancer patients if treated early.
