It occurs in bronze brown, light brown and reddish brown in color. Colingnite has a resinous luster, and its hardness varies between the hardness of talc and gypsum.It is associated with other minerals such as antigorite, artinite, brucite, calcite, chromite, chrysotile, hydromagnesite, hydrotalcite-pyroaurite, lizardite, magnetite, uvarovite.Coalingite is developed from brucite which is rich in iron, in the surface weathering zone of a serpentinite near Coalinga, California, USA.
