It is a combination of a laser source and a detector and is used to characterize optical fiber. FOTE accesses only one end of the fiber and makes multiple measurements that are used to reveal defects and faults. It also determines the amount of signal loss at any point in the single optical fiber or complete network. FOTE is widely used by network constructors as well as service providers and operators to characterize each component of a link, to pinpoint a potential problem with the fiber or to find faults in the network.
