Executive summary

Global reserves of silver were 529,900t (tonnes) in January 2015, with Peru accounting for 98,900t, followed by Australia (85,000t), Poland (85,000t) and Chile (77,000t). These four countries collectively accounted for 65.3% of the global total. Other countries with significant silver reserves include China (43,000t), Mexico (37,000t), the US (25,000t), Bolivia (22,000t) and Canada (7,000t).

Silver occurs mainly in its pure form, as a minor constituent in the ores of copper, lead
and zinc, as well as in minerals such as argentite and chlorargyrite. Mine production in 2014 was 936 million ounces, up from 911 million ounces in 2013, with Mexico the largest producer, followed by Peru and China. Global silver mine production is forecast to increase to 1,142.5 million ounces at the end of the forecast period supported by upcoming developments such as, the La Preciosa, Crespo, Conga, South Arturo Pumpkin Hollow, Ghanzi, Bowdens and Sorby Hills projects.
