Syphilis is a type of sexually transmitted infections disease caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum. The infection spreads mainly through sexual contact. Congenital syphilis, however, affects infants by transmission of the infection from the infected mother to the fetus. The rate of syphilis infection is high among men and particularly in those men who have sex with men. In 2014, around 36 million people worldwide were infected by syphilis. The global burden of syphilis is gradually increasing. Unprotected sex and sexual intercourse with multiple partners, affected by syphilis infection are the key factors contributing to the spread of this infection. However, early diagnosis of the infection enables quick recovery from the disease. Testing methods employed for syphilis detection includes enzyme immunoassay (EIA) test, venereal disease research laboratory (VDRL) test, rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test, and point of care (POC) test kits.
