Go Solar to Save Money, Help the Environment

LA general contractor recommends solar panels to power buildings and homes, save money and help the environment

El Segundo, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/15/2015 -- Solar panels can do more than just provide electricity. They can save the money and reduce a building's impact on the environment.

"A lot of people think about solar panels as just a way to generate electricity," said Cecille Maristela of Urban Green Development Inc. "That is what the panels do, but they also do a lot more."

Panels on the roof of a building reduce the power costs of the building because they are another layer on the roof. Think more shade.

"That's a side benefit most people don't think about. What you're doing with rooftop solar panels is creating another layer on the roof. This is more insulation and even a layer of shade because of the gap between the panels and the original roof."

While the panels are making electricity to power heating and cooling systems, they shading and insulation effects also lower the temperature on the surface of the roof. Heat transmission through the roof layers is reduced.

The electricity the panels provide also means the building or home doesn't have to draw on the power grid. Sometimes the local power company generates electricity through fossil fuel-powered plants.

"When you take less electricity from a plant powered by coal or natural gas, then the plant burns less fuel. Less coal has to be mined, transported and burned. Less natural gas has to be pumped and burned," she said.

Solar panels last for 30 or more years and can be installed on top of most roofs without problem.
