Going Abroad for Medical Treatment After Brexit: Potential Changes Affect Patient's Decisions

After Great Britain's "yes" vote for Brexit, fuss has started in many areas, including healthcare.

Vilnius, Lithuania -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/09/2016 -- Going abroad for medical treatment is a normal practice for British people. Tens of thousands of people from the UK go to other countries for surgeries and health checkups, and the numbers are growing each year. A huge factor influencing this is the EU directive that allows patients from the EU to get medical treatment in any EU country and get the expenses covered by their country of residence.

Now, as the United Kingdom is going to leave the European Union, it is not clear what is going to happen with the EU directive - different opinions suggest that UK patients may no longer be able to go abroad for medical treatment so freely.

"We have noticed the fuss. Patients coming from the UK are not sure about how it's going to work once the UK has left the EU." - says Andrius Jonutis, the General Deputy Manager at Kardiolita Hospital in Vilnius, Lithuania. "some patients have said they have decided to postpone their surgery and opt for medical treatment abroad now, just because of the voting results" – Andrius Jonutis adds.

It is still easy to go abroad for medical treatment, and still significantly cheaper to have surgery outside of the UK. For medical treatment options at Kardiolita Hospital, check out http://www.treatmentinlithuania.co.uk/services.
