Google Debuts Google Play Family Library to Share Purchases Between Six Google Accounts

Google just debuted Google Play Family Library that allows up to six family members to share their purchases from Google Play across their devices, including apps, movies, TV shows, books and games.

Shenzhen, Guangdong -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/01/2016 -- Google on Thursday officially released Google Play Family Library for people, which allows up to six family members to share their purchases from Google Play across devices. This program enables users to share movies, TV shows, books, apps and games across Android phones and tablets. And in some cases, users can share them across the web, iOS, and other connected TV platforms like Roku, Android TV, Smart TVs and more.

To get started with Family Library, users need to access a new setting in the Google Play Store and configure one person as the "Family Manager" to add other family members. The family manager should be an adult in the family who's responsible for adding and removing members.

Once people set up Family Library with an Android device or on web, the whole family can share purchases and one payment method with different Google accounts. Like Apple's family sharing service, the purchase approval can also help prevent children from buying some unbefitting apps or in-app purchases on Google Play. Although members' purchases will be shared with everyone, there's the option to selectively share items to other members.

"With Family Library, you can choose which items you want to share and which to keep to yourself – for example, I'll probably keep my collection of comic books in my personal library," Raj Iyengar, product manager for Google Play, said.

Movies, TV shows and books can also be shared with iOS devices, such as between iPhone and iPad with Google's apps, and computers and Chromebooks through a web browser. iOS device users will have no need to transfer movies from iPhone to iPad with iTunes or iOS transfer tool when they want to enjoy HD movies on iPad.

Google Play Family Library is now available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, the U.K. and the U.S. Meanwhile, up to six people can continue to use Google Play Music's existing $14.99-a-month family plan to share streamed music.

Family Library has flexible payment options for users. While there is a credit card that will be shared as the family payment method, members is able to buy items with their own payment methods, including gift cards and Google Wallet.
