Government Spending on Infrastructure to Create Huge Cement Demand

On the back of government’s spending on infrastructure and growth of housing sector, the cement demand is expected to surge at a CAGR of more than 8% during 2013-14 to 2015-16, says RNCOS.

Noida, UP -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/21/2013 -- The demand for cement is correlated with the growth of housing, commercial and infrastructure sectors of a country. In India, the government is focusing to develop its infrastructure and taking initiatives to promote affordable housing. During the Twelfth Five Year Plan (2012-17), the Government of India plans to increase its investment in infrastructure to US$ 1 Trillion, which is nearly double of the US$ 514 Billion expected to be spent on infrastructure development under the Eleventh Five Year Plan (2007-12). In such a scenario, the cement demand is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 8% during 2013-14 to 2015-16, says RNCOS in its recent report.

In India, majority of cement demand come from housing sector. On the back of growing middle class segment, emergence of nuclear families, and modern attitudes towards home ownership, the housing sector continues to dominate as the largest cement consuming sector in the country. However, massive investment from government is expected to increase the share of infrastructure in total cement demand. Projects such as the dedicated freight corridors, upgraded & new airports and ports are expected to enhance the scale of economic activity, leading to fast growth in cement industry.
