Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/05/2014 -- The trends seen in grocery retailing in Peru in 2012 remained prevalent in 2013. Growth continued to be fuelled by expansion to lower income districts in Lima, as well as other cities outside the capital, where demand remained far from satisfied. Most grocery retailers choose to expand to the provinces using the supermarket format, which better suited cities less populated than Lima, as well as involved a significantly lower investment. Furthermore, rising disposable income levels and improved access to credit cards had a significant positive impact on the sales of grocery retailers.
Sales within modern grocery retailers were led by Cencosud Peru SA, Supermercados Peruanos SA and Falabella Peru SAA, with these three players accounting for a combined retail value sales share of 83% in 2013. These companies were the most aggressive in outlet expansion within Lima and the provinces, while they frequently updated the promotions offered to customers making purchases with store credit cards. In addition, these retailers focused on progressively expanding their range of private label products, which increasingly attracted middle-income consumers looking for a combination of standard quality and affordable prices.
