To find out the answer for this is the main goal of the research conducted by the Georgia Institute of Technology wherein they evaluated and monitored for more than 15 months 500,000 tweets composed by 507 Twitter users. The patterns on how these tweets were made and the interactions that these posts garnered were observed.

The study revealed a formidable conclusion: Positivity is the key. “It's all about what you say and how you say it.” Ideas must be clearly written and qualify information must be shared. Appalling as it may seem but it is a truth that negativity in tweets causes loss of followers. It is a fact that people feel uncomfortable with people who post negative things about basically everything.

Too much posting about one’s self is another factor. Jeff Sonderman of Poynter emphasized that "Informational content attracts followers with an effect that is roughly thirty times higher than the effect of [personal] 'meformer' content, which deters growth. We think this is due to the prevalence of weak ties on Twitter."

Researchers Eric Gilbert, Sarita Yardi, and CJ Hutto revealed that other pertinent factors that help in improving the growth of Twitter followers are having a quality and complete profile, regular tweets with quality information, and relevant and social impacting topics to tweet for.

Following other people on Twitter is also one way of increasing one’s follow base. Another reason why this is proven effective is that when you follow a lot of people, especially those who share the same interests, one will have more ideas as to the topics that will be discussed in the tweets. And there would be more interactions that would be shared as well between people who have the same interests and views.

And of course, responding and engaging to the tweets of one’s followers and the people one follows is a key in improving engagement rate. Never ignore the followers. Answer those who ask questions, thank those who provide their comments. Responding directly to the person who tweeted is equally important. It makes the response personalized and followers deeply appreciate engagement. This habit of responding and engaging actually helps build a solid Twitter reputation and usually leads to attracting more followers.
