Homeowner Referral Network (HRN) Business Celebrates 20 Years

Stay-at-home Mom Launched Home-Based Business That Expanded Into a Cottage Industry Nationwide

Hewlett, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/03/2017 -- Home Remedies of NY, Inc., a home-based Homeowner Referral Network® ("HRN") business that pre-screens and refers home improvement contractors to homeowners celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. In the last two decades, the company launched by a stay-at-home mom has grown from a local, home-based business into a cottage industry nationwide.

The contractor referral business was founded in 1997 by Debra Cohen to serve the needs of local homeowners looking for pre-screened, home improvement professionals. Contractors referred by an HRN pay a pre-negotiated commission for work secured and the service is free to local homeowners. The network of contractors referred by an HRN include painters, plumbers, carpenters, electricians and general contractors to name a few.

After the HRN proved successful locally, Cohen expanded nationally by helping other entrepreneurs launch independent home-based contractor referral businesses in their area.

Cohen said, "As a local homeowner, I personally realized how challenging it was to find reliable contractors to work on our 75-year-old Tudor home. And, as a mom, I know how difficult it can be to find a balance between work and family. My Homeowner Referral Network (HRN) business helped me do both."

There are currently more than 300 home-based Homeowner Referral Network businesses operating across the country. The business model appeals to not only stay-at-home moms and dads but career changers and retirees who want to start a home based business with low overhead, flexibility and proven profitability.

"I started Home Remedies from my basement on an old farm table with just a computer, phone and a refurbished fax machine. My goal was to make a few hundred dollars each month to help with our family finances," Cohen said. "I never dreamed that my contractor referral business idea would appeal to so many people."

Today, the HRN business has expanded its services to serve senior homeowners. Aging in Place Referrals is a new marketing arm to the 20 year old HRN business model that helps senior homeowners connect with trustworthy contractors who can modify homes so that older homeowners can live independently regardless of age or ability.
