It is produced by the anterior pituitary, and it is required to attain normal size for children and adolescents. It also has major effects on lipid and carbohydrate metabolism of an individual. The effects of human growth hormone are mainly mediated by IGF-1 and IGF-2. There are two forms of recombinant human growth hormone approved in the market: Somatropin and Somatrem. Somatropin has 191 amino acids and Somatrem contains 192 amino acids. Growth hormone deficiency can occur either due to a damage to the pituitary or the hypothalamus gland, or can also be acquired genetically. Some of the signs of growth hormone deficiency are adiposity, short stature, and hypoglycemia.
