Derby, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/13/2017 -- It has recently been reported that refugees living in the Algerian Sahara are using a hydroponics system to feed their animals.

Hydroponics, a growing method in which does not require fertile soil, has allowed for their goats to consume much better diets than previously and this allowed the people of the Algerian Sahara to consume better diets also. Before they introduced hydroponics the meat and milk from the goats was of poor quality which lead to people suffering. There is no doubting that hydroponics has changed many people's lives in the Algerian Sahara already.

With support from WFP Innovation, solar powered hydroponics containers were taken in refugee camps where local farmers were provided with the opportunity to learn how to use the systems, creating sustainable systems for refugees living there. So far these units have supported at least 500 people and not the WFP is looking for other countries which could benefit form similar systems.
