Officially, it is called the train running status service.
The spotting is ensured by monitoring the railway stations each train goes through in its journey. The status can be obtained only in the case of train which have a GPS device mounted.
In addition, the online software can also identify the PNR status, which means tracking a passenger's details and their traveling status through the 10-digit number known as the Passenger Name Record. One such number is printed on each ticket issued by the Indian Railways. Thus, travelers themselves may check their status and see whether they were confirmed or still left on the waiting list.
