The Canadian internet retail landscape is becoming more fragmented as more retailers are entering the space, being domestic or foreign based. On the whole, Amazon continues to be in the lead, with close to a 31% value share of sales for combined amazon.com and amazon.ca. The company still has a strong reputation in Canada and has been actively supporting its Canadian branch, with amazon.ca adding more products and product categories to its line-up, such as an increased number of beauty care products and groceries. The latter were added in late 2013 and widely publicised in Canadian media. However, while actual sales through Amazon sites remained positive, the share in percentage terms witnessed a decline as more retailers entered the fast growing e-commerce.
Over the forecast period, value sales at constant 2013 prices through the internet are expected to continue healthy growth, with a projected 14% CAGR in constant value to achieve a total of C$12 billion in 2018. After years of slow growth and lagging behind major developed markets, the Canadian online retailer has been picking up steam with more retailers entering e-commerce and improvements made in merchandise selection, shopping experience and delivery as well as a variety of other options and services, including loyalty programmes, which help to draw consumer attention. Furthermore, an increased number of mobile apps and increased ability to shop online through mobile devices in Canada is also expected to push sales forward.
