Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/30/2014 -- Smartphone volume sales increased by 11% during 2013 in New Zealand. This is compared with a 35% decline in feature phones during the same period. Smartphones are capable of accessing the internet, while feature phones are not. Indeed, smartphones accounted for a 79% volume share of all mobile phones in New Zealand during 2013. The volume share of smartphones within New Zealand has grown rapidly over the review period, increasing from a mere 26% volume share in 2008. Similarly, volume sales of tablets increased by 14% in 2013, growing by a massive 339% from 2008 to 2013.
Progressive Enterprises was the leading player in internet retailing in 2013. The company?s value share declined over the review period from 16% in 2008 to 12% in 2013. This decline was largely the result of other players entering the internet retailing category. Progressive Enterprises is a multichannel retailer, involved in both grocery and internet retailing. The latter refers to the company?s online grocery sales through its Countdown brand (www.shop.countdown.co.nz). The company launched its internet retailing arm in mid-2011. Furthermore, Countdown launched a Facebook page in late 2010 to capitalise on the social media buzz. The page acts as a customer service and promotional tool for the brand. During 2013 Progressive Enterprises was the only grocery retailer to offer internet sales. As a result, Progressive Enterprises has a significant advantage over its major rival (with grocery), Foodstuffs.
