The leading players in store-based retailing have come to accept that they cannot ignore the channel any longer and this has led them to develop their online activities. At the end of the review period, internet retailing in Russia was presented by purely online players, with store-based retailers rapidly expanding into online sales, including grocery retailers, apparel and footwear specialist retailers, leisure and personal goods specialist retailers and home and garden specialist retailers.
Internet retailing in Russia is a highly fragmented category which comprises a high number of players operating at national and regional level. Even the largest companies operating in internet retailing in Russia failed to generate value shares in excess of 5% during 2013, with the three leading internet retailing websites in the country ulmart.ru, KupiVIP and Svyaznoy accounting for 4%, 3% and 2% of total value sales in the channel respectively in 2013. Ulmart.ru and Svyaznoy both specialise in the sale of consumer electronics and computers, while KupiVIP is a general retailer offering a wide variety of goods over the internet.

It is expected that internet retailing will continue to record positive growth throughout the forecast period, rising in value at a CAGR of 14% in constant 2013 terms to reach RUB1,285.4 billion in 2018. New players are expected to enter the channel operating at both regional and national level. At the end of the review period, internet retailing activity was concentrated in Russia's largest cities, although due to the high level of saturation of internet retailing in Moscow and St Petersburg, much of the development of internet retailing in Russia during the forecast period is expected to be in the country's regions. Due to the wide variety of products available online and the increasing levels of competition in the channel, the quality of service is expected to improve in internet retailing in Russia during the forecast period.
