Isabella Santos Foundation Grants Funding to Pediatric Clinical Trial

Waxhaw, NC -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/12/2016 -- For several years, the Isabella Santos Foundation has been raising money in support of pediatric cancer research, particularly Neuroblastoma. The foundation was begun in honor and memory of its namesake, Isabella Santos, a young girl who bravely battled Neuroblastoma for most of her life. Through fundraising events like an annual 5K and Fun Run in Charlotte, NC, the Foundation has managed to raise thousands of dollars in support of pediatric cancer research in just a few short years. This month, they are proud to announce that thanks to contributions from hundreds of participants and generous donors, the Foundation is able to grant $200,000 to support funding of a groundbreaking clinical trial.

Neuroblastoma, a cancer of the nervous system, is typically diagnosed when children are very young. The average age of diagnosis is just 18 months. The early onset and aggression of the disease means that many families struggle with these challenging forms of pediatric cancer, and research is direly needed in order to create progressive treatments and, eventually, cure the disease. The clinical trial that the Foundation has funded will take place at Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte, NC, and will offer children with Neuroblastoma a treatment option in the form of a new drug that causes cell death in cancer cells. The existence of this trial gives new hope to children living with Neuroblastoma and their families.

Despite the progress indicated by this trial, there are still miles to go. The Isabella Santos Foundation continues to raise money in support of Neuroblastoma research through events like their annual 5K fundraiser, one of the most popular local 5K runs in Charlotte, NC.
