Issue 5 of Picking Perfection Newsletter Addresses Variety of Picking Methodology
East Granby, CT -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/27/2014 -- The fifth issue of “Picking Perfection” (a weekly e-newsletter) to be released September 8, 2014 addresses choosing the correct order picking methodology for a distribution center (DC) operation. The product being handled, total number of transactions, total number of orders, picks per order, quantity per pick, picks per SKU, total number of SKUs, and value-added processing all contribute to a careful consideration of what picking practice is best.
The upcoming newsletter will discuss industry surveys conducted over the last few years, conclude that between half and two-thirds of order fulfillment DCs are manually order picked using a combination of pallet jacks and order picker trucks. Manual order picking methods are commonly used by both large and small distributors throughout the logistics industry in the United States. Picking methods that bring products to the person such as horizontal and vertical carousels, AGVs and AS/RS are commonly used along with more advanced robotic picking methods.
Each week the newsletter will look at best picking practices.
