There are two methods of tank gauging: volume based tank gauging and mass based tank gauging. Inventory Tank Gauging instruments are of two types: point level instruments and continuous level instruments. A point level instrument provides a reading of the liquid level at a specific point whereas a continuous level instrument provides a continuous reading of the liquid level inside a tank. Inventory tank gauging instruments are divided into two technological segments: Electronic Inventory Tank Gauging Instruments and Mechanical Inventory Tank Gauging Instruments.
