Doylestown, PA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/07/2017 -- On Friday, August 25, 2017, Senate Bill 290, commonly referred to as the Ignition Interlock Law was put into effect. Keith J. Senator John Rafferty, R-Montgomery County, introduced this legislation to decrease crashes and save lives. Last year, there were 345 drunk-driving fatalities statewide. Other states with similar laws underwent a reduction in drunk-driving related deaths.
Those charged with driving under the influence for the first time will now have the ability to pay to have an ignition interlock system installed in their vehicles, instead of having their licenses suspended for one year. The latter form of punishment often leads to repeat offenders. Without the ability to drive, those charged have a difficult time fulfilling their regular responsibilities. With this new system, they'll still be able to support themselves and their families by driving to and from work or wherever else they are needed.
Although it isn't cheap to have the system installed and sets the driver back about $1,000, the cost of not having an automobile is worse. To make it work, the sober driver must blow into the system in order to start the car. This system prevents the vehicle from starting if the driver has been drinking or if someone other than the driver blows into it.
