Lawn Care 101 – A Few Easy Steps for a Beautiful Lawn

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/23/2016 -- Following these basic tips for lawn care maintenance can save a lawn from disaster and homeowners extra expense. When rainfall is not in the forecast and dry conditions seem to be the norm, homeowners begin to wonder how to ensure their lawns can stay esthetically pleasing and healthy. Following these basic steps can help keep the brown grass at bay and enable green grass to return.

During the lawn cutting season it is important to monitor grass height. Leaving the grass blades slightly taller will help provide shade for the soil and roots and retain more moisture as a result. A good rule to follow is to never remove more than 1/3rd of the grass blade when mowing.

Sharpen blades regularly. Cutting grass with a dull blade actually tears at the grass leaving a jagged grass blade. This invites organisms to take up residence in the grass. Typically, a sharpened blade can last for 10 hours of mowing. Consider owning a second blade as back up option so when the original blade approaches the 10 hour mark, a new sharpened blade is nearby.

Let clippings lie. When grass is cut at the correct height, it is perfectly fine to leave the grass clippings where they are. Less work! They can recycle themselves into the soil and will save homeowners money and time on spreading fertilizer. If the grass is overgrown, leaving the clippings is not recommended. Leaving clippings on an overgrown lawn will block sunlight, moisture and nutrients and cause a lot of damage. Clumps of clippings or a large amount of cut grass should be removed promptly after mowing.
