Let's Smile! Release Statistics Concerning the Oral Health of Children

Parents and children need to understand how oral health impacts general health now and in the future, reports LetsSmileDental.com

Fairfax, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/03/2015 -- According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, 42 percent of children between the ages of two and 11 have had cavities in one or more primary teeth. Children living in low income houses and those of Hispanic or Black descent tend to be more at risk of dental caries, and 23 percent have dental caries that remain untreated. Oral health remains of great concern for all, as oral health impacts general health. Let's Smile! Pediatric Dentistry (http://www.letssmiledental.com/springfield-office/) works with parents and children to ensure any dental issues are detected and treated in a timely manner.

"Untreated dental caries can lead to future health problems. For this reason, early dental care is essential, as a child learns to care for their teeth properly when they are developing. Good oral hygiene continues to be critical at every stage of life, and Let's Smile! emphasizes this at a very early age. The entire office is designed with children in mind, so they look forward to coming to see the dentist," Christina Bahrami, spokesperson for Let's Smile!, announces.

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research reports 21 percent of children between the ages of six and 11 have had cavities in one or more permanent teeth, with eight percent having cavities that remain untreated. Children in lower income households and those of Hispanic descent are less likely to receive treatment for cavities in these teeth than those in other demographic groups. Dentists need to recognize these trends when examining children and find ways to encourage proper dental care in children of all ages and races.

"Dentists need to provide information on these statistics to parents to ensure all parties understand the importance of regular dental visits. Prevention is key to avoiding dental caries, and the staff at Let's Smile! highlights this at all times. When parents and children understand how to properly care for the teeth, dental caries become less of a concern," Bahrami explains.

Children often fear visiting the dentist, as they don't know what to expect. Parents need to recognize this and not dismiss these fears. The younger a child is when he or she first visits the dentist, the less likely they are to fear future visits. Parents shouldn't include too many details about what will happen during the visit and a dentist that specializes in working with children should be chosen, as he or she understands how to make the visit less frightening.

"Let's Smile! strives to have a positive impact on children and provides a safe and fun environment. Kids feel at ease visiting the office, as the staff treats every child as if they were their own. Staff members take as much time as needed to make certain the child feels comfortable at all times. Parents should expect nothing less," Bahrami states.
